Mack parks at a nearby parking lot and walks to the house, just after dark. He begins fiddling with the back door lock, using his jiggler to unlock it. But he notices that there is a second lock, one that is keyless. He's upset because these things are dependable, with no wires and no batteries to change. The digits can be programmed for any entry code that the owner wants to use. Mack begins entering numbers. He thinks that by trial and error he will get the doorknob to turn and walk right through the door. But he's surprised when two hours later he's still trying.

It's real dark, so Mack tries the other doors on the front and sides of the house, but they have the keyless entry, as well. He goes back to the rear door and keeps trying. There's never been a door he couldn't get through, and he's never been defeated at this in his life. At some point in the middle of the night he thinks of happier days when people were less informed and thought that keyed locks were adequate protection against a break-in. In those days he could enter a house in 5 seconds, spend 60 seconds collecting valuables like watches, guns, and jewels, and be out of there before anyone noticed. If there was a security alarm system, he'd simply disable it before he went in. Dang. Times were getting hard.

It was getting daylight when Mack gave up on opening the keyless doorknobs. He's spent the entire night trying to break in. His failure meant his burglary days of stealing people blind would some day come to an end. He lamented that times were changing, and decided that it was perhaps about time to give it all up and find a new career. Maybe he could be a security adviser or consultant. He didn't know, but he knew that his next job would have something to do with security and the protection of valuables.
